High Five for Friday

Hello Friday!  Can you believe it's the last day of January already? I trust that you all had a good week. Keeping in line with Lauren Elizabeth, I'll share my High Fives from the week with you again today.

1). On Saturday my youngest daughter & I met up with my Sister & Niece & Nephew for some "Christmas gift-card shopping". The girls got to try-on different outfits from Justice & pick one buy & my nephew went shopping at the Lego store. They all left pleased with their purchases! Of course, us "big girls"each snagged a little something for ourselves too. She got this fun rhinestone statement necklace from the Buckle & I picked up this hat from Charming Charlie. We all had fun & enjoyed our few hours together.

Sorry for the creepy eyeball look here

2). Sunday was a beautiful day here in Colorado & I was able to meet up with a friend for a nice run. It felt great to be outside exercising & I always enjoy catching up with a good friend! Win-Win!

3). Sometime over the weekend, while putting away clean laundry, I did an impromptu mini closet clean-out. Something I hadn't worn in a while caught my eye & before you knew it I was tossing clothes into a pile for donation. Man, that feels good!!

4). I've mentioned before that Wednesday nights are one of the few nights for us that isn't packed full of "must-do's". The Hubby has been working late recently, so the girls & I had Game night this past Wednesday. We started out playing Disney's Apples to Apples & then moved on to one of our favorite new games, Heads Up by Warner Bros.  We have the app version, although I know you can buy it in stores as well. It's actually based on the game Ellen Degeneres often plays with her guests - it's a charades-type game. The app is very fun though because it also records the people who are acting out the words/phrases & you can re-watch all the action & laugh at yourselves!  Super fun & I highly recommend it...well worth the $0.99!  Plus it's great to have on your phone because you can break it out & play spontaneously when you're with friends or when you need entertainment for the kids!

5). I purchased these cute earrings at the Loft recently, & they are quickly becoming my favorite "go-to" earrings. They are simple & neutral, yet eye-catching & sophisticated. Not to mention I got them for $8 ($32 originally)...score!

Well, there you have it, a quick snippet of my week.  Any big plans for the weekend besides the Superbowl?  If you need outfit inspiration for the big game, check out this post for ideas.  Don't forget to root for the Denver Broncos!!

Have a Happy Weekend!

Mega Dot

I touched a little on Polka Dots in my "Favorite Trends" post.  I.Love.Polka.Dots!  To be honest, I'm not even sure why really.  I know part of it is that it's easy to mix patterns with polka dots.  Other than that, maybe it's because I feel like it's somewhat whimsy yet sophisticated.

I recently splurged & purchased this Mega Dot print blouse from the Loft.  I did get it at 40% off, but even at that, it was still a splurge for me.  But, hey, that's what Christmas Gift Cards are for, right? Anyway, no regrets with my purchase at all!

I wore it to the office recently & paired it with a raspberry skirt (also from the Loft, but on the clearance rack - sorry, I can't find it on their site anymore).  I wore my black platform booties & a rhinestone statement necklace.

Then last week I wore it to meet friends for lunch, so I used it in a more casual outfit.  I wore jeans, layered it underneath a blue sweater, & wore black wedges.  Of course, adding jewelry for the final touches.

It's important for me to be able to use all of my pieces in multiple ways.  Not to mention, that it is also one of the core concepts for this blog - providing examples for versatility.  So, in true fashion I've created example boards of more ways you can wear polka dots just to get you thinking!

Polka Dot blouse with Sweaters

Just like my example pictures, you can wear sweaters over the top of a blouse like this.  You can even wear a pattern...just be sure the scale of the pattern on the sweater is different (smaller or larger) from the dots on your blouse.  You can even do a sweater with polka dots itself - in this case, they should be small polka dots on the sweater.

Polka Dot Blouse with Skirt Options
Polka dot blouse / H M denim jacket, $41 / Topshop plaid skirt / Blue skirt / Boohoo circle skirt / Dorothy Perkins skater skirt / Sole Society high heel shoes / Short boots, $36 / Dorothy Perkins bracelet / Kate Spade earrings

Again, try mixing a patterned skirt with your polka dot top.  You can even add a belt as well.  If you are wearing a belt, I would either leave the blouse un-tucked & wear the belt at your natural waist, or tuck the blouse in & wear the belt on the waist band of the skirt.  Always keep in mind your scale from the two patterns you are mixing....one should be a smaller print & the other larger.  You can also try this with any patterned pants you may have.

Polka Dot Blouse with Scarf options
White blouse / Tinsel skinny jeans / Charlotte Russe ankle boots / Flat shoes / Betsey johnson jewelry / Satin scarve / Jessica Simpson accessory / Boohoo braided scarve / Purple White Black Plaid 3 Piece Polar Fleece Hat Scarf Glove Set

Of course, an easy way to add more pop to your polka dot top would be to add a scarf.  Again, try mixing patterns...I think you'll find you love it.  If you're not comfortable mixing patterns, that's OK, try adding a solid color scarf or colored skinny jean instead.  You can also see in this example how you can mix the 2 polka dot items together like I mentioned above.  Don't forget to add your jewelry for the icing on the cake!

So, what do you think...are you going to get on the polka dot train like me?  If you'd like to see other options of polka dot tops, be sure to check out this post.  Of course, there are polka dots everywhere right now (tops, bottoms, outerwear, & accessories), so play around with what interests you.

As always, comment below or contact me if you have questions!

Spirit Wear

I don't know if you've heard, but there's this big football game coming up on Sunday...they call it the Superbowl!  And in case you live in a cave, the Denver Broncos are in it!!!!  Oh, & they are playing against the Seattle Seahawks :-)

I took the opportunity to create some example boards for apparel options for the Big Game.  If you are like me, you don't own any Team Jersey's or Team type spirit wear.  That's perfectly o.k. because you can put together a great outfit using standard clothing items that you most likely already have hanging in your closet.  I would say here that I don't think it's beneficial to go out & buy anything new if you won't ever wear it again. Take a look at the boards below & see if you can think of items in your closet you can make work.

I know you all are going to wear orange & blue though, right??

Bronco ideas first...

Blue & Orange

V neck top / Gap sweater / Dorothy Perkins cotton t shirt / Hollister Co. blue jeans / Wet Seal brown boots / Old Navy brown shoes / Yochi clip earrings / Accessorize navy blue earrings / 2b bangle set / Gap bright shawl / Scarve / Dorothy Perkins scarve

Mixing a striped shirt with a patterned scarf is a great way to go.  All these pieces could easily be worn again in other outfits.  A pair of skinny jeans with boots or a flat finish the outfit.  I liked adding the brown shoes to the outfit for contrast, but you could also do a Navy, white, or blush colored shoe as well.  Don't forget to add some fun jewelry too.

Comfy Blue & Orange

Michael Kors graphic design tee / Diesel long sleeve sweatshirt / American Eagle Outfitters hooded pullover / Daytrip top / American Eagle Outfitters long tee / American Eagle Outfitters blue jean jacket / Sperry Top-Sider lace up shoes / Converse laced shoes / Skechers cap toe shoes / Kate Spade tortoise earrings / Kenneth Cole gold tone jewelry / Polish jewelry

I thought I would show some examples for a more relaxed option as well.  Again, mixing graphics & patterns is always an easy & interesting way to go.  Pairing a graphic tee with a cardigan, hoodie, or jean jacket is easy & comfortable.  I liked the white jeans with these options, but you could also do a denim jean, or grey jegging as well.  Don't forget to accessorize...it's the icing on the cake, even when you are super casual.

Alright, I felt obligated to show at least 1 option for those Seahawk fans (gasp)....but that's all you get - just 1 example :-)

Blue & Green

V neck sweater / Old Navy plaid shirt / Old Navy plaid shirt / Hollister Co. blue jeans / Suede boots / Topshop braided necklace / Vince Camuto earrings / Lightweight scarve

Luckily there are a lot of blue & green plaid/flannel options out there right now, which makes this Spirit wear easy.  Pair a scarf with a flannel or put a sweater over one &, voila, you have a great outfit.  Boyfriend jeans, simple jewlery, & ankle booties top it off.

Don't forget that you can mix & match different pieces from the example boards (i.e. wearing a jean jacket with a striped top & scarf, etc).  The purpose in showing these example boards is to get you thinking of ways to use what you have.  So, put you're thinking cap on & see what you can come up with for the Big Game!

Go Broncos!!

High Five for Friday

Friday again....& thank goodness! I've been tired this week, so I'm looking forward to the weekend. How about you?  I'm linking up again with TheLaurenElizabeth for High Five for Friday. I have to say that I'm glad I do this post weekly because it's easy for me to think of the "negative" things that happen (such as spilling an entire cup of coffee in the seat of my truck while trying to rush off to school & work), but the little pieces of happiness are easily overlooked. Doing this feature makes me appreciate more parts of my week.   So as you read along, make sure you think of 5 things from your week that are positive too!

1)  The Christmas Tree is down (angels singing here)!!!  Last Friday night the 4 us worked together & got everything put away, dusted & vacuumed. Needless to say, I went to bed a very happy person that night!

I got my corner back!

2) I got to spend time on Saturday shopping with my Sister-in-law & Niece. My Sister-in-law's goal was to get "a couple of complete outfits, including accessories & shoes". She recently stocked up on a couple of pairs of jeans, so we were really looking for tops, accessories, & shoes.  We found her a great knit blouse & a stripped sweater...it was less than $18 for the two!  They had never been to Charming Charlie, so a visit there was a must!  She got a great silver & white statement necklace as well as a black mixed metallic long necklace to go with her new tops. Both of the necklaces were "outside of her box", yet are still neutral so she can wear them with anything. Lastly, of course, we had to stop at Target! We found a couple more tops there, including a cream cardigan for under $6.00!  She also walked away with 3 pairs of shoes from the clearance section. I was proud!  She said something that stuck with me..."I want shoes that make me feel pretty". I think a lot of women under-value that "feeling". Everyone deserves to feel pretty...put the time & effort into yourself!  It doesn't have to take a ton of time or money. Although my Sister-in-law's goal was to get outfits, my goal was to show her that having a wardrobe you love -that makes you feel pretty - doesn't have to drain your bank account or be complicated.   We're on the right track & I'm excited for her!

Love the shoes she picked...fun but neutral!

3)  P!nk concert....finally!  After having been originally scheduled in October & rescheduled twice, we finally got to see her on Sunday. Had a great time with girlfriends & P!nk sure knows how to put on a show!  Very entertaining & well worth the wait.  I've been a huge fan of her music for years, but now I have even more admiration for her as an Entertainer.

What I wore to the concert...in case you wanted to know ;-)  Picture is dark...sorry!
The Kin was the opening band for P!nk. I knew absolutely nothing about them before the concert. I will say that I really enjoyed their music!  A pleasant surprise for going into it with zero expectations. The Kin is made of 2 Australian brothers & a drummer named Shakerleg, who doesn't use drum sticks-he uses just his bare hands! Between the 3 of them, they play all the instruments as well as the vocals & even broke out the didgeridoo (wow, had to look up the spelling of that one).   You can check out some of their music here.

As I said earlier, I'm learning to pin-point the small things & appreciate them more. For example, on the way to our weekly gymnastics session we only hit 2 red lights the whole way!  Now, we (or I) always seem to notice when we hit every red light, but when is the last time you can say you noticed hitting all green lights?  I'm happy to say that I actually noticed that this time & it perked me up a bit. We left 4 minutes late & arrived 4 minutes early...weird how that works, eh?

That's all from me today, but feel free to tell me about your highlights if you'd like...I'd love to hear from you. Be sure to check back next week for new posts, & follow the blog on Facebook, Instagram, & Bloglovin (links in the upper right hand corner) to stay in the loop.

Have a Happy Weekend!

Black & White

Can I just say how I forget how much I like black sometimes.  I tend to get hooked on adding & mixing colors with most of my outfits, that I forget how much I like the look of a good black shirt!  On that note, I thought I'd share with you my ensemble from the other day.  Because it is simply Black & White you want to be sure to add some visual interest...in this case I used patterns & textures.

I got this heavy knit cardigan from Target back in October.  It was one of those items that I actually paid full price for (minus a $5.00 coupon & my Red Card dsicount) because I knew they wouldn't stay in stock.  Sure enough, I haven't seen it since.  The shirt underneath is just a simple long sleeved crew-neck tee.

For accessories I wore my rhinestone statement necklace, simple black earrings, a light brown belt, & animal print wedges.  I've listed the exact jeans & necklace from The Buckle below (the necklace that I have is the bottom picture). I've also listed similar options for the cardigan since the exact one is not available.  Of note, these jeans are a great "lower cost" option from The Buckle, however, if you purchase them make sure they are SNUG as they stretch out quite a bit (hence the belt).  I think the "worn" look of this jean also adds visual interest...if they were a dark, solid color, it probably wouldn't add such a nice contrast.

Jeans with Black & White

Quick, comfy, & put-together...the perfect combination!!

Favorite Trends

Before we know it, all the Fall & Winter clothing will be gone off the racks as stores start bringing in the new Spring lines.  I suppose this has a bright side too...1) even though we won't really be able to wear any Spring-like ensembles for another few months (depending on where you live), it's still a breath of fresh air to see the new colors & trends & gets us excited for the warmer weather eventually heading our way...2) anything you may have wanted from the Fall/Winter trends is most likely going to be on serious markdown in the next few weeks/months.  Yep, it's o.k. to still be purchasing cold-weathered items.  Most of us still have 3-4 months before the weather really starts warming up.

I thought I'd share with you some of the current trends that I'm loving.  Some of these will still be very wearable in the Spring & maybe Summer.  Versatility...gotta love it!

Elbow Patch Tops

ASOS sweater / Red cardigan / Sequin top / Elbow Patch Raglan Sweater | FOREVER21 - 2072330881 / jcp™ Thermal Colorblock Sweater - JCPenney

I have really liked these Elbow-Patch sweaters & cardigans since they came on the scene.  Although, I don't have one (yet), I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a good deal.  I'm really liking the black & white faux leather patch one on the top right as well as the sequin patch top below it.

Polka Dot Tops

Wallis keyhole top / Dex transparent blouse / Polka dot top / Adidas striped top / Polka dot top / Woven top / LC Lauren Conrad bow top / Dot cardigan

I am obsessing over Polka Dots right now!  I think I'm obsessing because it's a fun pattern & very easily mixed with other patterns.  I did recently splurge on a blouse & I'll have a future blog post about it :-)

Vests

Tinley Road black vest / Charter Club jacket / Nicole By Nicole Miller vest / Xersion pink puffer vest / Black vest / Tweed waistcoat

I'd like to add a couple more vests to my closet.  I think they can offer just the right amount of warmth as well as texture to an outfit.  From faux fur vests, to puffer vests, to tweed or herringbone print vests...they can all add pizazz to an outfit.

Pencil Skirts
Pencil skirt / Mango pencil skirt / Zara pencil skirt / Liz Claiborne pencil skirt / Worthington skirt / Worthington skirt / Pencil skirt

Another hot trend right now is the Pencil Skirt.  You can find them in pretty much any solid color or pattern.  I like how you can pair a Pencil Skirt with a blouse, sweater, cardigan/cami set, or casual tee.  They provide a lot of versatility, which is a must for me.  Hm...maybe another blog post there too!

There you have it...some of my favorite current trends.  How about you...what are your favorite trends as we near the end of the Fall/Winter clothing season?
